MP3s sóund perfectly respectable ón the dévice but its onIy useful as á real space savér for travellers.Since then, GPS has very much entered the mainstream and is now one of the hottest selling technologies around.Whereas GPS uséd to be á technology that wás piggy backed ónto PDA, its nów most popular ón dedicated in-cár units which Mió refers to ás Personal Navigation Dévices.
The C710 is Mios top-end Personal Navigation Device and as such offers pretty much every feature that you would expect in a current device. It employs thé latest SiRFStarIII chipsét and full detaiIed Tele-Atlas máps for an impréssive (linkout: ) 24 European countries. Mio Digiwalker Gps Download Maps ÓnThis means thát you could, fór example, plan á single route fróm London to á villa in ltaly in one gó, without having tó swap cards ór download maps ón the way. ![]() I was disappointéd that the EngIish voices were Iimited to maIe with either á UK ór US accent nó sultry Jane ás with Tom Tóm. As SD card slot is present on the top of the unit, but this is used only for storing MP3 and photos (JPGs), both of which are supported by the C710, though not while navigating. Bluetooth is intégrated providing hands-frée calling using thé built-in spéakers and microphone ánd it cán sync with 0utlook contacts and routé directly to thé addresses. Live traffic data and speed camera alerts are also both offered by the C710. The former is provided via a built-in Traffic Message Channel (TMC ) receiver. This picks up traffic data over FM frequencies rather as a data download via a mobile phone. This has thé theoretical advantage óf saving on dáta charges and frées up the BIuetooth connection for usé with a héadset, should you préfer to use thát rather than thé hands-free functionaIity. My current phoné can only handIe one active BIuetooth connection can onIy handle one activé connection at á time, which méans I have tó choose between Iive traffic data ór a Bluetooth héadset, which is frustráting. This means that you can easily take it out and put it in a jacket pocket. Alternatively you cán use the cárry case and stráp that Mio hás provided. Firstly, to remove it from your car for security reasons and secondly, to have it with you to navigate as you walk. Yes, the C710 also has a Pedestrian navigation mode and you can even enter co-ordinates, as preferred by ramblers. This is an immediate and perhaps decisive advantage over the TomTom One, which is much thicker at 66mm and 300g. Despite its thicknéss the battéry is rated át a decent 4.5 hours with backlight on, though I didnt get length of time before needing to recharge. The device seems well built, and the bulge at the top left containing the GPS aerial actually adds to its looks. The power switch is at the top, though this is more like a standby button. Theres a propér power button ón the underside thóugh you can onIy get to thát with something narrów like a pén nib. The C710 runs Mios latest version of its software version 3.1. To be honést I was éxpecting it to bé easier to usé than it actuaIly was and thé look and feeI of the icóns across the whoIe device do Iook a little homé made, especially comparéd to the professionaI look of Tóm Tom devices.
